Based on current trends, analysis shows the average smoking prevalence in England will be 10% in 2030 2.
Beyond 2030, smoking prevalence continues to fall but it is not until after 2050 that smoking in England is eradicated.
There are still around 6 million people smoking in England. Although this number is set to continue to decline, England will not UNSMOKE until after 2050 unless significant action is taken. This should include more effective communication to existing smokers about the range of smoke-free alternatives available to them, where they cannot quit, or choose not to.
The following interactive map uses analysis undertaken by Frontier Economics to show the parts of England forecast to stop smoking first – and those predicted to still be smoking after 2050.

#ItsTime to UNSMOKE. Adults in England will continue to smoke for at least another 30 years and inequality in smoking levels across the country are at their peak. Analysis shows that the difference between low prevalence areas and high prevalence areas is now wider than ever.
We can bring smoking to an end sooner if significant action is taken. The best option is always to quit smoking completely. But for those who do not quit, there are now more alternatives than ever before - and smokers need better information to understand which is the right option for them.
By taking action now, we could eradicate adult smoking as soon as 2045.
It's time for change.
It's time to UNSMOKE England.
